and 'Blue'
My mission statement.
My Belief is simple and held
for over 48 plus years. A horse that is "told" will work "for
you" and there is no doubt of that. But a Horse that is "Asked"
will "Want to work 'With' you" and there is no doubt of that either.
What's the difference? Well, lets see? Patience, time, understanding, calmness,
quiet, and, recognition of every horse's individuality and personality. Horses,
like humans, resent being told but like to be asked. Rebellion is born of
domination after all! Simple!
Buster Waeland. 2006
Horses are individuals that work within a social structure and it is only by observation and "Listening" to that individual working in it's own social environment, whether herd or yard, stable or field, that the individual horse may be fully understood. Just like us Humans!
I started working with horses in 1958. Not just working, but earning a living as a rough rider or outrider looking out for and after wild horses and cattle, and since and until now have a very close and unique approach to my horses in training and in resolving problems that clients horses or their owners have. My method in total revolves around the horse itself and then the way it is, or has been, handled, and then in dealing with the origin of the problem itself.
Although an Englishman I have both
Sioux & Cherokee ancestry and have worked all over Europe, the US, and
Canada, earning my primary living with horses. Developing a bond of understanding
that has come from long years of experience and my interpretation of the way
my Ancestors worked. The term "Whisperer" is
wrong terminology in my view as I do not believe that we can 'tell'
horses anything that they don't already know naturally, and we should not
work horses out of their natural environment by setting definitive time scales
for our work.
My methodology is to observe, and "Listen" to the horse. Leave the
horse in its natural state and set out with patience and not a schedule that
meets some showy criteria. I have a concern that fast and short term cures
may in the longer term allow the problem to re-occur, or may be buried in
the horse's subconscious by sharp training trauma causing a route of stress
that will, or may, lead to other more complex problems.
My name given by my Lakota Sioux Friends and registered at the Sioux Heritage Association of:
'Sukawaka Wastelake', ["Loves Horses"], sums up my total way of thinking. Thank you for reading this set of values; perhaps our paths will cross again.
My Spirit Shield.
